Recently we all witnessed a heart breaking loss of the Indian Cricket Team in the WTC ( World Test Championship) final against the opponents we prefer to lose every time . Yes, the Kiwis. Since 2003 India has never won against New Zealand in the ICC tournaments. The loss belongs to the whole team and not just a single person. It’s so easy to say it right, talking about the ethics and all. But do we as Indians ever follow it?

It’s hard to answer that because if our team wins we say it’s because of the team effort and if we lose then captain is responsible for it. The thing that rankles me is that there are some extraordinary wins with some spectacular performances in the tournament and then when it comes to the loss we just simply say “change the captain”. Sometimes I think so called cricket pundits are waiting for Virat Kohli to loose and so that they get a chance to say their “there are indifferences within the team. Rohit Sharma should be the captain”. And these cricket pundits are the same persons who tweeted a consoling message for Kane Williamson when NZ lost the final against the England in 2019 cricket world cup. Just the day after the loss of India the whole media hungry for their TRP called the ex cricketers to discuss on the topic of captaincy change.

Instead of backing him, supporting our Indian team we are criticizing our captain. Legendary and veteran all rounder Kapil Dev also faced this question recently in an interview. And his answer was “is playing in a final of an international event a small thing? Of course not, and then we should be happy that our team went to such stage. And on the course of a single game we should not change our captain”. And same was the answer of the great Sachin Tendulkar that Virat should continue as a captain.

A man who kept India at the top of the ICC test rankings for consecutive five years, who always lead from the front, who once again taught India how to win matches and series outside sub- continent, under whose captaincy India won series in England, South Africa and of course the unforgettable Australian tour in which we made history by winning a test series ever on Australian soil. He is the one who loves to participate and enjoy other’s success. Who’s attitude is like- throw one stone on me I will throw whole mountain on you. Once Indian fast pacer Mohammed Shami told that after he took a wicket Virat started dancing and was so excited that he asked Virat “ wicket tune li hai ya maine”.

And I don’t think I need to remind anyone about his personal stats. Name any batsman other than him in the history of this sport who averages more than 50 in every single format of this game. So it’s pointless to talk about his consistency. Talking about his sportsman spirit we all know how he carries tradition of MS DHONI to hand over the winning trophy to the youngest member of the team and standing at the corner not coming in the limelight. He is the one who was seen as the happiest person in the dressing room when Rohit Sharma scored his personal best score and always keeps his country ahead of his personal milestones.

So it’s high time up and we should stop blaming a single person for the loss of the game. At the last if we can refer Kane Williamson as the “good boy” of the game then we should not forget that Virat is the “son of our soil “and world cricket know him as “King Kohli”…………
